Esse Quam Videri - To Be Rather Than to Seem - North Carolina State Motto
About this Project
In response to the stereotyping of Muslims and in recognition that it is human nature to fear what we do not know, community based artist Todd Drake is working with Muslims in North Carolina to create self-portraits that share real, rather than seeming, reflections of self to a wider audience. Muslims from a variety of backgrounds and living in a variety of communities across North Carolina are invited to participate in a series of art workshops hosted at mosques and community centers. This project is being conducted from November 2007 through December 2008. Todd Drake is available to work directly with participants through August 8th, 2008. After that time, interested persons may still submit images and essays for consideration.
The goal of this art project is to draw a richer portrait of Muslims living in North Carolina, build bridges between Muslims and non-Muslims, and promote civic and cultural integration of Muslims into the wider society. Outcomes will include an exhibition of self-portraits, a documenting Website and book. The latter will show-case a selection of the self-portraits, photo collages documenting the process, and contextualization.
